International students who cannot meet the direct entry requirements can begin their degree studies at Birmingham City University International College (BCUIC). This module introduces the essential principles, methods and techniques in AI. It covers a broad range of topics such as search, planning, logic, knowledge representation and machine learning. It discusses examples of intelligent systems and studies how to develop intelligent applications such as expert systems, learning systems, and autonomous mobile and robotic systems. Students will be offered lectures, which introduces the important concepts, explain the principles and techniques, and demonstrate how to apply them to solve problems in the related topics. The workshops will provide practical sessions to help students understand the content of the lectures and build the necessary skills to develop intelligent systems.

Mechanical Engineering MEng/BEng (Hons)

Contact hours will vary depending on each year’s timetabling any optional and elective module selections you make. You will be able to review each module’s indicative timetable in advance of making and confirming your module selections each year. We’ll aim to process your application within 2 to 6 weeks, but this will depend on when it is submitted. Having an A-level or BTEC Level 3 qualification in a computing-related subject will not exempt you taking any first-year modules, as we want to make sure that we give you a quality introduction to all of the relevant topics. It will also equip you – both practically ai engineering degree and theoretically – to meet the needs of the real world. If, in the future, the increases to regulated fees permitted by law or government policy exceed the rate of inflation, we reserve the right to increase fees to the maximum permitted level.

Undergraduate study

The teaching team are specialists in each subject area and bring a wealth of up-to-date knowledge to the course. They have extensive research experience in their subject area and are noted for their research output. Developed in direct response to industry need this course will provide the building blocks required for you to step into a career in AI. If you are considering bringing your own computer, most of the software we use is on Windows machines though there is some use of Linux. We do not use Apple MacOS and their use is not required but some students do choose to bring MacOS machines so a Mac can be a viable choice if you so wish. Year 2 of the course will build upon the solid foundations you will have laid down in Year 1. You’ll take modules from streams 1 to 5 to deepen your learning and start on two further streams studying intelligent systems and undertake a group engineering project. You will start to develop your interests which you will then begin to focus on in Year 3. Successful graduates of this course should be in an excellent position to respond to future changes in the computing job market by having the skills and knowledge to gain AI jobs that do not exist yet or are just emerging. The transferable skills learned on this course could also equip you for a wide range of other careers.
